Description: The Argentinean Institute of Nivology, Glaciology and Environmental Sciences (IANIGLA) is an official institution created through an agreement between the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), the National University of Cuyo (UNCuyo) and the Government of the Province of Mendoza (Argentina). The main mission of IANIGLA is to contribute to the knowledge of the factors that regulate the past and present environmental dynamics of western Argentina, with emphasis on the abiotic and biotic natural resources present in the Andes Mountains. A critical mass of researchers in geological, geochemical, paleontological, hydrological, meteorological, biological and social sciences has been formed, with a growing integration between the research groups that comprise it and with strong interaction with governmental, academic and social institutions.
The working group “Dendrochronology and Environmental History” has been linked to the approach Sustainable Development in Highland. This group has extensive experience in paleoenvironmental and historical studies, strongly linked to environments in the Andes mountain range. The study of the dynamics of natural ecosystems has a strong correlation with the interaction between these systems and climate change, with the consequent impact on ecosystem services. The human groups that historically and currently develop their life and activities in these mountain areas are directly conditioned to these conditions. For this reason, the researchers in this group aim to integrate studies of environment and society. The interrelationship between environmental degradation and silvopastoral management for improving resource use and sustainable development are elements of interest in our group. In addition, research on socio-political processes related to the management of natural resources and power disputes related to environmental issues are addressed. Within the framework of the precepts on political ecology of linked mountain and plains communities, there is interest in analyzing socio-environmental conflicts, the degree to which groups participate in these social processes and in their interrelation with the environment for rational use of natural and cultural resources, within the Inclusive Sustainable Development concept.
The research group is made up of researchers from various disciplines, with an interdisciplinary approach from different scalar perspectives in time and space, favoring a global perception of the implications of disputes around natural and cultural resources, spatial and regional planning, land use change and the Human, and their economic and social geography approach. The Highlands.3 project is carried out in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Human, Social and Environmental Sciences (INCIHUSA), the Argentine Dryland Research Institute (IADIZA) and the Institute of Geography (Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, National University of Cuyo-UNCUYO).

Description: The Argentine Dryland Research Institute (IADIZA) is an Executive Unit of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) and a tripartite institution established by agreement between CONICET, the National University of Cuyo and the Government of Mendoza.
The activities developed at IADIZA seek to conduct scientific research on the structure and functioning of dryland ecosystems, and on this basis promote the bonds with society. In addition to the production of specialized scientific literature, the development of technologies for conservation and sustainable use of ecological systems, transfer and diffusion of knowledge, building of human resources and teaching.
In Highlands.3, IADIZA participates through the Research network in dryland socio-ecological landscapes. This network involves different research lines interested in understanding ecological and social processes through multiscalar and multidisciplinary approaches. The regional focus lies on the Central and Southern Andes.
