LOFOTLAM SA
Norway
Description: Lofotlam is an association of 68 active sheep farmers in Lofoten with a geographically protected name for their products. Lofoten consists of a mountain range reaching into the Norwegian Sea, embraced by the Gulf Stream every spring. Within few days, the vulnerable nature is covered with lush pasture grass and nutritious herbs. Lofoten is a tourist magnet and is visited annually by 250,000 tourists who want to experience our magnificent nature. It is of great value to protect the nature and to keep the landscape open. Sheep farming therefore has an important role including the sheep farmers to maintain their tradition and sustainable operating arrangements. The characteristic meat of Lofotlam has unique qualities through its muscle conformation, its taste and tenderness. This is achieved through a small-scale operational plan, systematic breeding and follow-up of individual animals on pasture. Bad weather and storms cause sea salt to swirl over the landscape affecting the vegetation. The sheep graze from sea level to the top of the green mountains, and a natural part of the feed is seaweed in the floodplain. In this way, Lofotlam achieve quality characteristics which are referred to as “Norway's pre-sale” - finished salted by nature. Awareness of cultural and productive traditions and consumers' ever-increasing interest in the products has been the basis for the region and for the geographically protected designation. The protection expresses farmers willingness to preserve and guarantee the specific qualities of the Lofotlam products. The farmers benefit from added value and the increased market.
Regional focus: Lofotlam is geographically limited to Lofoten, and the animals must have been born and raised here, they must have grazed in the mountain areas, and they must meet strict quality requirements.
